This is now obsolete. Sorry guys.
Do you mean this whole procedure is obsolete, or just one step?

I try to open revolutionary and the response I get in the terminal window is: 'cannot execute binary file'. No issues with the beta key b/c it never asked for it, just 'cannot execute' and done.

???

Are you sure a recovery was installed? Were you able to root successfully? Are you sure this is even the correct guide for you?

i do not think root was installed correctly. when i boot up to hboot it shows S-OFF. I then tried to reboot into recovery so i could turn usb toggle on and copy su-2.3.6.3-efgh-signed.zip the phone just sits on the white HTC EVO 4G screen and just hangs. i also installed the clock work mod when it asked me to as well. is there any chance that clock work is bad and i should try and install armonia recovery instead? i need to boot into recovery so i can run copy su-2.3.6.3-efgh-signed.zip correct?

Phone Info
htc evo 4g
android -2.3.3
Software number - 4.53.651.1
Current HBoot - Revoluntionary Hboot -6.16.1002
Original HBoot- 2.16.0001

You are correct. You should definitely install an Amon_RA-based recovery. For the EVO, ClockworkMod is unreliable, and that could be the source of your current issue.

After installing a recovery, you can flash superuser to gain root.

Folks,
I'm curious if anyone else has this issue. The Revolutionary beta key generator does not list HBoot 2.18.001 as an option and that is the version I have on my EVO 4G. Will the Root process still work by using 2.16.0001?

You need to reboot your Evo - but keep Power Button and Volume Down button pressed (very important), then you will see the boot info etc on a texty looking screen. you can't find it frmo UI anywhere.

Hope this helps

I just got Evo 4G as second device in the house, and will be trying the HTCDev method, just reading through the threads it sounds like that is the only way (straight fwd) way) that it's working with GB and 2.18.

Revolutionary definitely oes not work with 2.18 unless you downgrade Hboot

k000, can you point me towards what you are referring to? I have Hboot and 2.18 and apparently thats incompatable with this method?
