help salvage eris

Alright, so i used rom manager to backup my brother's eris (cm7) rom, then used it to install a new one (evervolv eris) because his phone is one of the unlucky ones who's trackballs refuse to work in recovery. the new ROM didn't come with GAPPS so there is no market, and it also didnt come with a file explorer so i cant just install .apk's from the sd either, i saw the workaround that someone did with ra's recovery to navigate using other buttons, but i can't get an astro or super manager apk to install in order to view files, let alone with root in order to extract the script. Ive also tried just emailing .apk's to his phone but they all say there is a parsing error which i assume means they're corrupted files? or bad md5's

if i could just get the gapps to install the new rom would probably be fine, but i'd also be okay with figuring out a way to restore the backup. maybe i'm just dumb and can't figure it out somehow.

any help would be much appreciated!
