Well, I got all the way past the $ signs, but then i entered adb shell and kept getting the $ instead of # so now idk what to do besides start over again

Aye, I'm also stuck in the exact same boat. I had no problem rooting my LG Ally, but this is proving to be a pain in the arse on the Optimus.

did u check your screen when it sits idle on ADB.

Check your screen to allow superuser request.

You only have to do it tha first time, otherwise ur not rooted.....

Even custom recoverys have the update.zip option. Which custom recovery did you install? Stock recovery will only have 4 choices, while a custom recovery with have a few extras including "backup and restore" which is the option you choose to create a nand backup

Did you unzip the flash image and recovery image to the SDcard?

Two alternate ways too. Sfhub has a couple scripts that does it for you.

Just do steps 3 and substitue step 7 when it tells you to install VH recovery

There is this new tool that works, Flash Image. but you have to rename xionia_cwma_12518.6.img to recovery.img to get it to work. Install the apk and find the recovery.img file on your sdcard. [APP] Flash Image GUI - xda-developers
