Nope, you're not crazy. Double tap to wake would be nice. I'm personally missing the home button from my Note

No, raise to wake does not activate the ambient display. It's still unsure whether or not that's a bug or a feature, but ambient display currently only comes on when a notification comes through.

Yeah double tap would be nice, but my guess is that it uses battery to keep the screen active? I don't mind not to have that since you still need to type your password after you wake the phone. Fingerprint is still the way to go if you want to get to the home screen fast.

I told the Google Assistant to, "wake up!!". She yawned at me, then said that she was awake. Cool.

My only gripe is that you can't set a photo like you could on the Note 7. Or at least I can't find it.

Definitely hope this happens! Loved the double tap, and also "Knock Code," from my G3. It was so hard to stop tapping the screen when I had to switch to an old phone after my G3's screen died.

If you're close enough to double-tap then you're close enough to unlock with fingerprint.
