This was the case for me too. I found out that you have to hit the down volume and the power button AT THE SAME TIME. Not one before the other.

Am I the only nube here? Samsung tab had a very simple screenshot button...how can I do it on the nexus? Not working...feel free to lol at me...

Hold the power and volume down when pressing at same time. It takes like a half second or so. You'll near a bleep then a shot of the screen will fly to the notifications

I normally press the power button slightly prior to the volume down button. I haven't had a single issue with that order.

Thanks to pworm14 for their helpful suggestion.

Attaching two screenies...the first with the clock widget and full screen of icons was what I started with. I've switched to the mostly clean look with the Serenity logo in the middle that I am using currently.
