Question about system apps updates

I heard when you update system apps it actually puts the update on your SD card and just links your phone to it and the original is still on the rom.
My Question is is there a way to force the update into the rom instead of having valuable space wasted? if so how do I do that?

Maybe. I have two 3VOs. When I tried to update the phone that didn't have an SD card I got and error message and I couldn't proceed. So, I found an old 4GB laying around, inserted it, and then the upgrade completed.
