How can I delete recent apps without having to click on the X or swipe them away one at a time. In Kitkat they could all be closed with one click.

On my nexus 10 there is a button at the bottom of the list to kill the apps. If the list is long, you have to scroll to the bottom.

There's certainly no harm in closing them, but I suspect the battery life change you're seeing is unrelated. The recent apps switcher isn't really doing anything; it just sits there regardless of how many things are displayed.

Yup, no more clear recent with lollipop. I wouldn't worry about your apps staying open unless there's significant drain on the battery, at which point that will be related to bad app.

If you have Chrome staying open as a card, rather than Windows within app, then the number of cards can be significant.
