Text messaging versus Hangouts

I use Hangouts for work and Texting with others. Had an S2 and had no issues using both together but now can not text at all. I disabled Hangouts (AT&T's recommendation), but still nothing. I have text messaging as my default messaging preferences, but still nothing.

What happens when you try and text? Is it all messages or just pictures (MMS)? Ensure your APN settings are set properly.

You shouldn't have to disable Hangouts as on an AT&T system it will only let you have one app that does texting open at anyone time.

On my stock AT&T S5 I have the choice of the standard Samsung Messages system or any app that does texting but can have only one active at any one time.
