Trouble recording phone calls

I need to record phone calls when I conduct interviews (yes, I know what the law is in my state) and was happily using the Voice Recorder that came with my HTC ("C" is for crap) Amaze. It worked fine as long as I had the call on speaker phone. Suddenly, it started crashing every time I tried to use it when the phone is in use. I open the app, hit the record button and the app shuts down. So I have tried at least a half dozen other apps purporting to record phone calls (some internal, some using the speaker) and not one of them will work -- they all either give me error messages or look like they are recording but result in an empty data file. I thought I had one that worked yesterday and it gave me an empty data file of a 30 minute phone interview.

My phone is current on updates, running 4.0.3, and I updated Voice Recorder. Any suggestions? I've got to get this figured out ASAP.
