Because from my understanding if voice goes to VoLTE they can convert that spectrum used for voice calls right now to more data spectrum.

Correct. At some point once volte is working well, they will eliminate cdma completely and probably refarm it to lte. Keeping cdma radios costs a bit of money, eliminating it would be a cost savings for verizon. Though I doubt that we would see the savings trickle down to us. Also, refarming existing cdma to lte would give more spectrum for lte. Also having voice and data occurring over the same spectrum allows for more effective use of the spectrum as I think calls will continue to decrease. When there are no calls, all the spectrum can be used for data. lte is also more spectrally efficient than cdma so this makes sense from a network point of view.
