I haven't received the ICS update yet, and I'm wondering whether to install it when I get it. What benefits did you get from the ICS update?

Well, if it's the OTA Sprint update, you get many things! You get decreased battery life, a ringtone for your texts that dings in your ear while you are talking on the phone (OH! And the person you are talking to can hear it too!), a nice ear warmer as the phone tends to heat up while in use! You also get glitchy video watching privelages too! :)
All sarcasim aside, the OTA update is a hack job at best. There are countless issues and they tend to vary from phone to phone. I had the OTA and it was ok. I used Jay's advise and assistance and rooted to stock ICS and it is tons better than the OTA upgrade could ever be! My battery life is about double that of the OTA (equivalent to GB). The phone does get a little warm while it is in use, but then again it always did. The software is very smooth and responsive. If you're going to go to ICS, root to stock FF18. You won't regret it. I didn't!

Plain and simple, there are NO BENEFITS to getting the ics ota update.

Not a hundred percent sure but I think that ics is going to be successful running on phones that got developed and programmed using ics, like the gal nexus, the new s3 and other new phones by HTC, in all about a half dozen or so for now. The epic is still a current phone and up to date but it loves gingerbread, not the latest os but it runs great on GB. And now were still trying to solve issues with ics and they are trying to push jelly bean on us, the only way that's going to work is if they cook up jelly bean in a way thats older tech friendly.

Its like having an old win95 computer and trying to install win7 on it, it may boot up but it sure isn't going to work good at all.
For me its gingerbread all the way, I tried ics, 4 different builds some were OK, some were horrible but at the end of the day I'm keeping my gingerbread.

I like the update. You get a lot of new features, obviously because it is ics The only issue I am having is worse battery life. And the text tying during the call which is not loud or annoying for me. Glad I'm not having other issues I'm hearing about.

Just a couple first impressions...OTA just came through this morning.

- I no longer need to use the Battery Circle app to see my battery charger % on the notification bar. The % is imbedded in the battery icon. This frees up space on the bar.
- the 3G and 4G icons are similar...if you don't have 4G it actual puts an X under it.
- Under Settings/Data Usage there are limits and a graph showing data usage. Pretty cool...however, for all I know this was available in some form on GB.

Pluses
  • Can use ICS only software like Chrome browser. Chrome is great, finally double tap on text zooms in fully/properly.
  • Use SprintID change ID to MyID and you have stock ICS interface which I prefer.
  • New lock screen, can add weather to it, easier to swype unlock.
  • Genre now works properly in Music Players.
  • Some report their GPS issues were resolved (haven't test myself yet)

Negatives
  • Battery Life Halved.
  • Some People report worse wifi (I haven't experienced that yet myself).

I HATE the ICS update on my EVO 3D. Everytime I use a app and go back to my home screen it goes back to the white HTC screen and reloads like I just turned my phone off. That just SUCKS the life out of my battery. WHY did they put a tool bar with icons I already use and have on my home page and now I don't have a notification button so cannot clear any notifications on my top......this just sucks !! GRRRRR
