Why does the SMS gallery have all recently used pictures?

I have a galaxy s7. Since one of the recent upgrades, when I go to attach a picture to an sms all recent pictures come up. I.E. Camera roll, pictures from Facebook message, whats app etc.
It used to be just my camera roll or whatever gallery I choose or used last time.
I'd like to choose what gallery I attach pictures from. It's kind of annoying having every recent picture there.
Is there a way of changing this? I have seen answers on changing the default app, but I don't what to do that.

The only way of changing it is to rewrite the SMS app, so effectively there is no way. The developer probably got complaints about the app always showing only the last folder used, and changed it. Some people prefer it one way, some prefer it the other way.

How do you get to the Recents Folder? I can only get to it in Messages also and it shows photos that are NOT in Camera, Gallery, Photos or Google Drive???
