Force Stop Applications

What does a force stop to applications do? Is it harmful? When do you want to force stop something?

No it's not harmful. It's similar to an app crashing in Windows, it just terminates the process.

If you're referring to the button in the app under applications you really only use it to reset the app when it has hung or something like that. It basically forces the application to stop running.
