Which App are you trying to use? Try removing the account and re-adding it.

You might also want to verify that all the settings are set correctly. Let us know how it goes.

When you re-add the account, let the phone set it up automatically. Then get your email provider's settings (google them - your email provider's name and the words email settings - sending is the SMTP settings) and check to see that the phone did it right.
