Why have I lost several applications from my home screens?

I once had phone, messages, contacts, the huge settings folder, etc. on my home screen, but they are gone and I can't find them. Not sure I didn't bring this on myself when pinching the screen and getting confused with the 'Remove' function I know I'm not using properly. I'd like to restore to what I had. Advice appreciated! Welcome to the forums. First, I would just make sure they aren't on another homescreen. If not, you are probably going to have to rebuild the folder. An option to prevent this from happening again: If you get a third party launcher, like Nova, you can make a backup of your set up, and​ you can lock it.
