If I understood correctly the "Airplane mode and WIFI mode", turning ON airplane mode will block off any communications whatever they are. However, if I turn on the WIFI, while still on airplane mode, I will be able to use internet and read my mails. What about giving and/or receiving calls ? I have a Galaxy s4.

Welcome to Android Central! Turning on Airplane Mode will immediately turn off all radios, including cell, wi-fi, Bluetooth, and GPS. Once you are in Airplane Mode, you can manually turn wi-fi or Bluetooth back on. The only thing you can't turn on manually is the cell radio--you need to exit Airplane Mode for the cell radio to turn on again.
