My phone is not on a charger but is still telling me it is charging

I did not notice it earlier but my phone is telling me it is charging. The battery has the lightning bolt and my Battery Mix app is saying my phone is charging. It is not on a charger nor has it been since this morning. What could be going wrong. I have read a factory reset might help? holding power and volume down. If i do that will it delete what is on my phone? or will it just reset the setting back to factory?

Welcome to Android Central! Which phone? Look carefully at the microUSB port and make sure there isn't any debris in there.
