how do i connect the s4 to play video audio on my older model home entertainment system with RCA av input? can it be done? what do i need to make it work?

Welcome to Android Central! You could get an MHL adapter to connect to the phone, then connect the HDMI part of the adapter to a converter like this: RadioShack HDMI to Composite Converter - Radioshack. No guarantees that it'll work. And the video quality would likely be pretty bad, since you compressing a 1080p picture into a 480p screen.
