Does Verizon's unlimited data plan apply to 4G LTE upgrades?

Currently I have a 3G phone that's almost 4.5 years old. Looking to upgrade at full-price to keep unlimited data, but the new phone would be 4G. I've always assumed it wouldn't be a problem. But is it?

Usually. Any change at all to an unlimited plan gives them the right to convert you to a limited plan. What most people do is upgrade another account, one without unlimited, then do a device exchange of the new device to the unlimited account.
