HTC Inspire 4g not successfully downloading apps or updates. What can I do?

I have been using an HTC Inspire 4g for several years with great satisfaction. Recently, I dropped it in water and had to replace it. My coworker had been using the same phone and recently upgraded to a new phone. His Inspire was working just fine. He gave me his phone, we reset it to factory settings then I installed my sim card into it. It now will not download any apps or updates from the Market. I have already typed in my gmail acct. info. It constantly keeps trying to authenticate google talk but fails. I do not want google talk, but know it is no longer available and since this is an older version it probably wants to update that and can't. However, the phone will not successfully download any app or update to apps already on the phone (i.e. Facebook).

Welcome to Android Central! Do you have 2 step authentication turned on for your Google account? If so, turn it off temporarily and see if that helps.
