why can't i get a notification that i recieved a text messaged

Just bought a galaxy note 5 and everytime i would recieve a text message nether a notification pops up nor does my ringer go off to let kno that i recieved a message. My notification settings are on and my ringtone sound is up. Can someone help

Welcome to Android Central! Is this when you have the Messaging app open to that conversation, or also when you're on the homescreen or any other app? Are you getting audible notifications from other apps?
