S4 - Home and Back buttons not working after 5.0 update

[AC Question]

My provider released the 5.0.1 Lollipop update and now my buttons won't work.

I have researched for a fix but to no avail.

I have very recently preformed a factory reset but still in the same boat.

Anyone found a way forward?

Welcome to Android Central! As a temporary workaround, install Handy Soft Keys.

Yes it still persists in Safe Mode.

I've seen this issue crop up on the S4 after the Lollipop update in other posts. Not sure if there's a fix. Have you already tried reinstalling the firmware using Samsung Kies or Samsung Smart Switch?

No I haven't. I have Kies on my PC so I will look into it.

Is it easy to reinstall the firmware? I imagine Kies will just tell me that the latest firmware is up to date. What is the process?

These are the steps for Kies 3. I'm not sure if that's the version that the S4 uses, though. Kies - How do I Restore my original Samsung ROM (remove custom OS ROM) using Kies 3?
