My son bought an htc desire 626 that was factory reset. We are trying to set the phone up but it says it requires the google account previously associated with the phone. How can we get this phone working or did my son waste 200 dollars?

Where did he buy the phone? If it was from a store I would take it back there.

The best thing to do is contact the seller.

The other way (that we can't discuss in these forums) is to search YouTube for "ByPass Factory Reset Protection on Android FRP with no OTG, no ROOT, no Cable"

Note that this has been patched on some phones in May 2016.
