why does my phone keep displaying "unfortunately google play has stoped" ?

It has been displaying this for a few months now. Since the start i can no longer download anything new, update anything old, get into gmail or play store.

Hi - have you considered performing a factory reset on the device? this would wipe your phone back to its original state allowing you to start again with it. Especially if you have been having this issue for a while and it's causing other Google services to fail.

If you do perform the rest, make sure you back your data up first - as it will all be wiped during the reset process.
