how to resolve "Samsung keyboard stopped" when accessing secure folder

Whenever I try to open my secure folder, I get a pause then the "unfortunately Samsung keyboard has stopped." error. I have tried hard rebooting, wiping the cache and installing a different keyboard (unfortunately it appears the secure folder defaults to the Samsung keyboard, no matter what) The keyboard works fine for all other apps, but apparently does not like the secure folder. Any ideas on how to resolve this short of a factory reset?
