Why does my Android Nexus 7 lollipop tablet run so slow?

Even though I run a cleaner regularly my tablet really dogs down, especially after it comes off of sleep mode. After I use it for about five minutes and give it commands it gets back up to normal speed. Give it more than one command when it's dogging and it'll lock up and take awhile to come back for another command. Aggravating. Do I need to do a factory reset? Don't have more than half my capacity used so it's not a matter of space left. Please advise. Tablet is about five years old and my new nexus 9 is very fast but I use this older one from time to time. Please advise, thanks.
