How much longer will Whatsapp support android 4.x

I'm wondering how much longer I can use my Android 4.4 phone for Whatsapp messaging. I am planning on keeping my phone until it dies (with me, phones and tablets last forever). Alcatel has not provided a lollipop update for my Idol X+, and I messed up an attempt to get root access and thus have zero chance of installing some semi decent custom rom.

Keep an eye on usage rates. As long as a significant number of people are using that version, they'll support it. When it starts dropping, you'll have to start figuring out your next steps. But that could take a while to happen.
