Why does Ambient Display turn my screen on multiple times for old notifications?

My Ambient Display feature has a random tendency to turn my screen on multiple times for the exact same notification, while other times it works properly and only turns the screen on for every NEW notification.

This happens for any kind of notification (texts, games, reminders, emails, etc..)
Please help me before i drop kick my phone...
