Samsung galaxy 6 has a broken screen how do I get into it to download pictures

Welcome to Android Central! Unfortunately, that can be difficult. In order to access them via USB connection with a computer, you'd have to change the USB connection from Charge Only to MTP -- and that requires you to be able to use the touchscreen. Unfortunately, you'll probably have to get the screen replaced, if those pictures are really important.
