WeChat gives "network unavailble" until I check it

I have WeChat running in the background on Android 7.1.1

Notifications don't come through until I check it. When I go to WeChat to check, it shows "network unavailable" for one second and then wakes and displays new notifications. So push notifications are not coming through until I check. Very annoying. Any idea what can be causing this?
