My phone only sounds for first text in a "conversation."

I have Samsung Galaxy J3. When I get a text, my phone will sound. Should we text further back and forth, none of the following text arrivals make a sound, so if I had put the phone down, but my party decided to text again, I don't see that text until I pick up the phone later. I had an older model phone (LG?) until last July that would sound for each text - was great! My daughter says her Stylo 4 is the same way. Very annoying. Any way to get the phone to sound for every text?

Welcome to Android Central! Does this only happen when the screen is still on and the messaging app is opened to that thread? Or does it also happen when the screen is off, or you're using another app (or on the homescreen)? It's normal for most messaging apps not to sound a notification if the messaging app is open to the thread where the incoming message belongs (the rationale being that you're already looking at the message thread and can see the message arriving).
