Samsung MHL adapter

What's up guys, so I have one of the older (dark navy blue) Samsung mhl adapters and a newer white one (not the most recent for S6, Note 5 etc). I've already learned they won't fit the note 5 microusb, but they will also refuse to charge my old s4 for some reason. The old one USED to charge it, but now magically doesn't. The newer one never did. Could this be a specific charging cord issue? Looking for any insight. Thanks.
