New Epic 4G ~ Can it Be Rooted and Most Stable Rom

My wife has a new Epic 4G and I wanted to root it for her and put a stable rom which is newer and faster than stock so two questions....

Can the latest stock firmware be rooted?

What would be the most stable non beta rom for everyday use?

I've found "Clean GB" and "Sleeper" to be great Epic roms. They are based on official (ec05 and fc09 respectively) framework, so all Sprint functions should work without issue. They are mainly tweaked for performance and battery life.

If you're looking for something "newer" as you mentioned, your only options will be the ICS based roms. CM9, AOKP, and MIUI are all great roms for the Epic, but all have their own quirks (like the stock rom doesn't either??)
