trouble with sms pics

Hi new to the forum and have a problem with my motorola xt701: I can text without difficulty and receive pics from others, but can't send pics. I saw in a thread here that others are having similar problems with the droid, but the solution of re-sending doesn't seem to work for me. This being an unlocked phone, my carrier was unable to help as it is not offered by them. Any suggestions would be appreciated. As an afterthought, do pics need to be saved to the sd card to be able to send? Thanks.
