How come GMail contacts auto-added to Contacts?

Moto G - stock Android.
When I receive/send an email from my GMail a/c from/to a contact not in my Contacts/People list it gets auto-added to the list, filed under their GMail a/c addr. I go into Contacts and there it is, with no action on my part. I delete these and would prefer that it did not happen, but cannot find a setting that causes this.

This is actually a function of your Gmail account, not Android. By default, Gmail adds everyone you e-mail to the Other Contacts list so that it will then autocomplete their e-mail address next time. You can disable this by going to your gmail account on a computer, navigating to the General tab in Settings, and disabling Create contacts for autocomplete.

You can also go to your contacts app and select the lists to show and uncheck Other Contacts if you would like the Gmail behavior to remain the same.
