Bluetooth play command doesn't work after Android 9 update

After my phone (Mi Mix 2S) got update to Android 9 I can no longer use the play button on bluetooth devices to start playing music/podcasts again.

I can pause whatever is playing but when I try to press again to make it start playing nothing happens. I have to take up my phone and press play in the app instead.

If I keep the phone unlocked then I can pause/play as much as I want but when I lock the phone and just a little bit of time passes I can no longer play again.

Anyone know what might be the issue?

Sounds like it may be a Huawei issue, it works for me on my Pixel 2 XL.

Have you tried unpairing the Bluetooth devices, then pairing them again?
