I think. I downloade a classical music app and I liked the music but it sucked my battery dry in a few hours. When I checked battery status the music app was the culprit. I uninstalled the app. The drain continued but when I looked it was Exchange Services that was doing the draining. I wiped the system cache, the problem continued, and the Nexus was for the first time ever quite warm to the touch. From 9 a.m. to noon my battery went from 100% to 52% with me in a meeting and not using the phone.

What would you try now?

Which app was it? From Google Play Store or somewhere else?

Do you need Exchange Services? If not, Disable it. Even if you do need it, try Disabling it for a while, then reenable it.

Yes, from Google Play Store but I don't remember which app it was. The classical music apps have a lot with similar logos. I have a gmail account that I think is used to sync data between my Nexus and my PC, but I'm not sure it's needed.

I don't know what happened but when I powered up at 4:30 this morning I was at 97%. Now at 3:20 p.m. I'm at 82%. I can live with that. I'm going to be more careful about downloading apps.
