Need help loading and playing movies on Nexus 7

The flash drive is loaded with a movie by using Handbrake. When the flashdrive is installed into the OTG cable and Nexus 7 and the Nexus Media Importer app is activated, it shows the movie in a video folder. However it will not run and when I try to use MX player, it can not find the file
Any help appreciated.

I could be wrong here but I think you'll find that it's a limitation of the Nexus Media Importer, it should play through NMI though...

If it's an avi file, you need to copy it to the N7's memory. If it's an mp4, it will stream to the player.

It's a mp4 file but still doesn't play. I missed the NMI point.
There must be someone that has had success riping movies and then loading them to a flash drive and using Nexus Media Importer to view them.
