TROUBLE PLAYING MP4 MOVIES... and MPG and AVI

Ok so I have never put movies on a device, mainly because I have never had a device I'd wanna watch movies on! But I downloaded a movie that was in Mp4 and it played fine on macbook quicktime... but I put it on the evo and it won't play the video... just the sound... also it won't even recognize MPG or AVI movies... can anyone advise what to do? Also what formats this thing will play? Thanks
