LG Escape SD cards

I've just bought a micro SD 8g for my LG Escape. I put a few songs on there from my laptop but the phone doesn't read when I have the SD inserted. the card is securely in place but my phone doesn't acknowledge it.
Is my problem the phone or the SD card? the card reads finely on my computer.
I'd appreciate advice, this is also the first Android phone I own

turn off phone, open back, put the SD card in the spot near the battery then power on phone. It went to reading "Checking for errors" to scanning files and media. SO far it is the only thing that has worked. O had the same issues
