    I'd go with any at least single-core 1ghz with 512mb ram, that should do for a while if you cant afford something better, if you do you might as well get him an iPhone 5S :P

    Depends on what phone and in what conditions you use it. Newer phones should have scratch-less glass, so unless you throw it around it should be fine without a protector

    It's pretty much hardware over software, although the difference is minimal, I'd go with the S4 just because it feals nicer in the hand
