I assume he's referring to how smileys appeared prior to the 4.4 update.

Considering it's part of the 4.4 ota, I'm not sure you can go back. Have you tried different keyboards?

Not sure about seeing the old little green emoticons, but you can go back to regular ASCII emoticons. I hate the new yellow ones. Just tap the smiley face button on your keyboard, and then tap the ASCII smiley immediately to the left of the backspace key. (This is on the standard Google keyboard.)

Yes, before the kitkat update. I know about ASCII smilieys, but liked the green things. All the weird emoji stuff should be kept in the eastern hemisphere...
