Can someone explain how the alert slider functions, please? Is there additional control through software too?

Right now I usually use Total Silence at work or sometimes vibrate only.

At night I use Alarms Only so I hear the alarm going off or when one of my kids is not at home, Priority Only. Priority only will let my starred contacts calls and texts and hangouts message go through and notify me.

The UP position on the slider is Silence, though alarms will still ring through and notifications vibrate, and you can let the phone vibrate on incoming calls

MIDDLE position is Do Not Disturb. Alarms still ring, and you can allow favorite contacts or apps to ring through. Anything you don't allow to override Do Not Disturb won't vibrate either.

BOTTOM position just lets everything ring and vibrate.

Sounds like you're coming from a nexus or very stock Android phone? It's taking me some getting used to coming from the nexus 6. Think I prefer the way stock handles the notification modes.
