USB debugging Question and Sync Question

Looking for a better way to sync my pc to my tablet and one of my options wants to do a usb debugging. From what I could see on this forum it doesn't look harmful. Just wanted to check. Will this root my tablet? Is there any risk? I keep having problems with Kies 3. Does anyone have a good substitute for Kies to sync calendar and contact items? I would really prefer a free app given my use would be limited. Thanks.
