I just noticed this little number 6 in the top right corner of the WiFi symbol. What does it mean?

We had Cat 6 cables put in our house but we don't have a 6 router we just rent from the cable company.

I have the same 6 on my wifi and it means WiFi 6. I upgraded my wifi back in March to WiFi 6. I get close to 800_900 Mbps at times but mostly average 500Mbps.

Oh well I just remember hearing our phones were 6 compatible but we don't have a 6 router I guess. I don't know about the cat 6 cables I just know 5 came standard at our house build but my husband wanted 6 and he got us 6 at hi charge. But our new Chromebook does some wifi I think it's AX. Just didn't know whether it's worth buying our own router or not.

Not the same thing. Cat6 WiFi is the new (or at least different) name for the Wi-Fi 802.11ax standard and has nothing to do with the cables connected to it. The industry group that names the Wi-Fi standards is switching to a new marketing term to help eliminate confusion.

Unlikely. Older routers are plenty fast and you'd be hard pressed to push their limits as it is. If you have slower internet at the modem, then a new router won't be any faster anyway. About the only benefit would be faster file transfers between devices within the network, which could help if you have large files to move around or high end gaming.

I agree with mooncat and others above. I finally replaced my 10 year old router with a new 4 antenna router with beam forming and the 802.1ax WiFi. And lo and behold I now get WiFi symbol with the 6 in it. Never realized that the S10 + was an ax wifi standard! My speeds to the router are now in the 900Mb range. But, the caveat is my Internet speeds are only around 120Mb. Also replaced my Optimum provided modem with a better cable modem capable of dociss 3.0 with 16X4 channels instead of their 8X4 channels. My speeds went from about 80Mb to the 120Mb straight out of the modem. Everything cost me under $200.00. Best investment I've ever made. Definitely see the difference with WiFi 6.
