thumbnails folder problem

in my phone hidden folder thumbnail is created and it occupies 1-2 gb of my space.. if i erase it it comes back again.....
how do i permanently erase it... or move it to externel sd card... i have reset the directories to my extsdcard but thunbnail folder still appear in sdcard0 which is phone memory....

Welcome to Android Central! The phone will always need to generate thumbnails in order to display various images correctly as thumbnails, like in the Gallery app or the music app. So if you delete the thumbnails, the system will generate them again. I don't believe there's any way to move that folder to external SD, at least unrooted.

Do you have tons of photos stored locally? That might be part of the issue, since each photo needs a thumbnail.

As far as I know the thumbnails do not take up user space: they are internally stored on the phone's (internal) SD.

If you delete the thumbnails, new ones will be generated next time you open a photo browser/ gallery.

PLEASE NOTE
If you're referring to a strange, unlikely huge thumbnail file, possibly named something like ".thumbdata3--1763508120":
Safe to delete. For some reason keeps adding up, easily to 6Gb or more. Again, internal storage, in this case probably not even "real" storage- but, to get rid of these spooky files:
1. In thumbnail folder, create folder ".new";
2. Delete ".thumbdata3--1763508120";
3. Rename folder ".new" to ".thumbdata3--1763508120"

Now the spooky file cannot reincarnate, since an object with the same name already exists. It's still a work around of course, replacing the spooky file by some other useless file or folder that won't expand.
