What he said, but note that in the Samsung mail app, there are two places you can set this. In the "General Preferences" and in the settings for the individual mail accounts. What's set in the account overrides whatever you set in general.

In the Gmail app, it's only in the settings for the account, but if you have more than one Gmail account you'll have to set it to silent in each of them.
