How do I use Google Wallet (tap and pay)?

So I tried using Google Wallet's tap and pay at BJ's (warehouse) and a convenience store (Oct 25) and both times nothing happens. And it's a bit tricky to sit there and troubleshoot with customers behind you and a cashier that says "it should just work"

I touched my phone (GS 5 Active on ATT) and there is not indication that anything is happening.

I have 2 cards and my bank account setup on GW and the app says "Tap and pay ready".

What's the trick?

Some places aren't really working... Walgreens was notorious although they probably have their act together now since the other payment service works supposedly.

I have never tried BJs but my Nexus hardware works pretty much all the time these days wherever I see Paypass.

A few places will have some questions on the payment terminal you may need to answer. The main two I have seen:

-is this a debit card yes/no (say no)
-credit or debit card (credit)
-enter PIN and press enter (no pin, just press enter)
