I've noticed that in direct sunlight, on auto brightness, it goes real high (I'll call it turbo brightness) as the Anandtech site mentions, but then after a few minutes, it'll reduce brightness down to 'regular max brightness'.
I've tested it out, even takimg it out of direct sunlight for a couple minutes then returning it, where it went turbo again, but this time for even less time.
I've concluded the issue is likely to be temperature related, because I did check the temp by hand and it was quite hot due to the warming effect of the direct sunlight. The second time I put the phone in sunlight, the phone was still warm from the earlier sun exposure, so ya I figure if the temp gets too high, there's internal protection to reduce power consumption and overheating of device, with one obvious way being to reduce brightness.

This may or may not explain some of other people's issues here...

    Cheers
I had the exact same problem but once I updated my software manually it fixed this problem.

For those who don't experience this issue. It only is noticeable when you are consistently going from a extremely bright situation to a fairly dark situation. Typically of you go from the bright sun to shade. It will automatically darken the screen. Making it nearly impossible to see anything. I did not have this problem originally, but now that I'm outside a lot for work I have noticed the change. Auto brightness is turned off. Screen brightness is on the highest and yet it's extremely dim. The effects only happen when I'm outside, when it is still bright out but I'm in a lower light area. Anyways that is my experience.
As others have stated, leave auto brightness ON ( and to MAX in your case) to get the highest level of brightness possible outdoors and still have it bright indoors.

Could it be the screen mode setting? Try changing it from "adaptive" to "basic". Samsung Galaxy S6: Review of the various display modes

    Hi guys,

    I recently upgraded my S6 edge+ to a s7 edge.

On both the s6 edge+ and s7 edge I have experienced brightness issues. I do not have auto brightness selected and have brightness to max. It constantly will dim the phone based on the light hitting the sensor. It's like samsung's built in adaptive brightness. I have looked all across the internet for a fix to no avail, so am posting to try and see if I can get help.

Some people might think "what's the big deal", but it really frustrates me. I might be OCD or something, but I hate when it will dim the screen without any input from me. I like to get the best viewing experience out of my device. I don't know why Samsung decided to add a built in auto brightness feature that cannot be turned off, changed, or toggled. Many users have experienced this and complained as I have seen in previous posts from other forums or in this one, because it is a persistent issue. The best that i've seen in terms of getting it fixed was a post a while back about a specific file you could replace in the samsung s6 edge+ to edit the code, or w.e in order to disable this function.

Oh, and no, it is not some issue that can be fixed by changing settings already on the phone, I am 99% sure of that.

So I really need help. This is a big issue for me, regardless of how miniscule it might seem.

I bought an $800 premium phone, one if not the best on the market. So when there is a built-in feature from Samsung that is constantly changing the screen view on it's own and is unchangeable, it's frustrating.

Hen man that opened the subject and all you guys ,
Dude you have written, expressed and did a good job describing the diming issue that I have too , I looked on YouTube see if any of the you tubers spoke about it but no luck , I thought it was a setting issue but I am really familiar with most of the settings and I couldn't find it and last I thought maybe because I have been using Nova launcher but it wasn't effecting the brightness.
In the past I had my phone dimed to save battery but on this one I can afford it and I love having it all the way up to show because I enjoy this amazing quad hd amoled display and for a reason it keep diming automatically. I appreciate it if someone can help me with that too .

You have Adaptive display selected. Go into setting and display and you'll have a choice of Cinema, basic, or photo select something else besides Adaptive because that will adjust your screen depending on what and where your watching something.

Resurrecting this old thread - are people other than me still seeing this? I notice the brightness change uncommanded at times and I have Auto Brightness off (full brightness set) and use Amoled Cinema mode, not Adaptive.

Mine has had a problem of being overly bright, almost blinding, in very low ambient light environments. For instance, in a car at night with no streetlights or anything, I'll unlock the screen to look at directions or something, and the brightness is set to almost half, which is extremely bright for a low light situation like that. The auto brightness has been way too aggressive for months now. It either wasn't a problem when I got the phone in April, or I just didnt notice it. But now it bothers the heck out of me. I'm not going to manually set the brightness every time I unlock the phone in different lighting. That's extremely annoying and time consuming throughout and entire day.

Following some advice on this from over at XDA:

    https://forum.xda-developers.com/gal...-apps-t3335046

I used Package Disabler Pro to disable the Samsung Gameservice (Game Optimizing Service - com.enhance.gameservice) and it appears to have fixed this brightness fluctuation for me. I'll have to give it more time to be sure, though.

I've had this problem with several of my phones, currently with the S7Edge, but also had it with the Note 7 and the Note 5. I did, at one time, use adaptive display, but right now using amoled picture. It doesn't bother me, and I'm sure there is some setting that's affecting it, but I haven't figured it out on the S7Edge yet. Smart stay is off, no auto brightness. It's not a big deal just wanted to add to the chorus.

As a fix, so far so good on what I posted above. I haven't seen it happen since I did that.

Hi all have you tried turning auto off and back on again or on and back off again as some times specially when auto brightness is activated if you manual adjust the brightness some times it will stick at that brightness even tho auto is still activated so this can become blinding in the dark or to dim in the light...

If you update to Nougat then there is options in that to get an extra 10℅ brightness if your phone's still to dim at max

I have had an s7 Edge since it came out. I have all of the adjustment settings turned off (manual set, not automatic), and I noticed that the random dimming seems to relate to those sunlight features. I have my phone set to portrait. I was tipping my phone backwards (like one might for texting) and it would dim, and if I lifted it directly upright again, it would brighten. If you cover the bar at the top of your Edge where the Samsung logo is, (cover the dots along with the camera), you will notice your screen dim. Uncover it, it will correct again. Not sure what causes it aside from that, but it seems to be a line towards the solution. Thought I'd share.

Exactly. But why does it happen with Auto Brightness off?
