Why are email notifications not popping up?

Hi--I've only switched over to the Galaxy from iPhone within the last 2 months. It's mostly great. However, I'm having one annoying issue:
I've searched through some Q&A, made sure notifications are all turned on, but I CANNOT figure out why I am not seeing email notifications pop up on my screen. I get the vibration and sound notification but nothing shows on the screen. I'd like to see which emails are arriving so I can determine whether I need to actually go into my email. It's annoying to have to exit my current app to check emails unnecessarily.
It's worth noting that I do get visual pop-ups for Hangouts and text messages, so they're not blocked or anything.

Any tips??

What email app are you using? I hear that the Gmail app for some reason isn't working with the popup. I think the built in email app does work with it. I can't remember. I've since installed Floatify because I use a couple of apps that i want to have a popup but isn't supporting the new popup.
